WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. ? Monmouth registered a 10-3 victory over Quinnipiac in game one of a Northeast Conference doubleheader, on Saturday afternoon.
Monmouth, which has won 19 of its last 20 games, improved its record to 9-1 in NEC play, and 21-9 overall.
Andy Meyers went 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI for the Hawks, who registered 14 hits. Shawn Teters added three hits as well for Monmouth, while Ryan Terry and Kyle Higgins each collected two base knocks.
Quinnipiac's leadoff hitter Ben Farina started the game with an infield single, and after an executed hit-and-run by Bryn Doyle put runners at the corners, the Bobcats scored their first run on a Ryan Buch wild pitch. Buch retired the next three batters, including two strikeouts, to keep it a one-run game.
Back-to-back one-out doubles by Teters and Meyers in the bottom of the first knotted the score at 1-1, and after a Paul Bottigliero walk and Nick Pulsonetti's single through the left side loaded the bases, Chris Collazo drew a walk, to put Monmouth ahead 2-1. After QU starter Tyler Brett struck out Terry, Brett Holland was hit by a pitch to drive in Bottigliero, and give the Hawks a 3-1 edge.
In the fourth inning, Monmouth posted an unearned run to go ahead 4-1. After Meyers and Bottigliero connected on one-out singles, Meyers advanced to third on a fielder's choice, and scored on the catcher's throwing error, as Pulsonetti stole second.
The Bobcats pulled within 4-3 in the top of the fifth frame when John Delaney connected on a two-run home run to left center, driving in Doyle, who led off with a walk. Delaney's sixth homer of the season came on Buch's 1-1 offering.
Following a walk to Holland and Higgins, Teters delivered an RBI single to center to plate Holland, and give Monmouth a 5-3 advantage. Off reliever Eric Bretscher, Meyers then added his second double of the game to score both Higgins and Teters, putting the Hawks ahead 7-3, in the fifth inning.
Buch improved to 5-1 on the season, with his complete game effort with 10 strikeouts. Buch has now tossed two complete games with double-digit strikeouts in NEC action in 2008.
Monmouth added three runs, with two outs, in the sixth to take a 10-3 lead, as Holland and Higgins collected RBI singles, and John Dennis reached on an error allowing a run to score.
