STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. ? Monmouth senior Brad Brach tossed a complete game shutout with 11 strikeouts to help the Hawks improve to 5-0 in Northeast Conference play on Friday afternoon, with a 5-0 victory over Wagner at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark.
Brach, who tied his career-high with 11 strikeouts, worked nine innings, scattering seven hits (all singles), while walking just one, to improve to 3-1 on the year. The right-hander was backed by Monmouth's 13-hit attack, which was paced by Nick Pulsonetti, who went 3-for-4 with a double, triple and home run.
Monmouth, which won its 14th straight game, setting a new school record, improves to 16-8 overall and 5-0 in the Northeast Conference. Wagner falls to 12-13 overall and 4-1 in the NEC.
Monmouth grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Paul Bottigliero led off with a single, and scored after a Pulsonetti double, on Shawn Teters' sacrifice fly against Wagner starting pitcher Jack Rice.
The Hawks went ahead 2-0 in the fourth when Teters doubled with two outs, and rounded for home on Chris Collazo's single up the middle.
After Wagner got back-to-back singles from Chris Drechsel and Vin Avella to start the home half of the fourth, Brach struck out the next three batters two maintain the 2-0 edge for the Hawks.
Pulsonetti drilled a solo shot to left center field with one out in the top of the sixth, to give Monmouth a 3-0 advantage. The round-tripper was the freshman's team-leading fifth homer of the year.
Monmouth added two runs in the eighth frame, as Andy Meyers led off with a single, and scored on a Pulsonetti triple to right center. Teters' sacrifice fly drove in Pulsonetti for the 5-0 advantage.
Pulsonetti added two RBI and two runs scored for the Blue and White, while Collazo added three hits.
Monmouth returns to action tomorrow, with an NEC doubleheader against Wagner. First pitch is set for 11:00 a.m.
