KISSIMMEE, Fla. ? The Monmouth University softball team dropped a pair of games at the 2008 Rebel Games on Friday afternoon. The Hawks dropped their first game of the day 9-2 to Pennsylvania, and fell 7-2 to Butler in their second contest of the day.
The Hawks have now dropped four games in a row and are 2-6 on the season.
Monmouth scored first in their game with the Quakers when Alexa Ferrara (West Caldwell, N.J. /James Caldwell) reached on an error to lead off the bottom of the second inning and came around to score on a double by freshman Abby Martin (Oswego, N.Y. /Oswego) to put MU up 1-0.
Penn would come back and two score runs in the top half of the third inning to take the lead, but the Hawks would even the score up at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth. Kara O'Dell (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley) led off the frame with single and advanced to third on an error, and pinch runner Jessellyn Jackson (Howell, N.J./Colts Neck) would eventually come around to even the contest.
The Quakers would strike for two runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and two more in the seventh en route to the 9-2 final. Freshman Melissa Mehrer (Florence, N.J./Florence Township) got the start in the circle for the Hawks and surrendered 10 hits, seven runs, six of which were earned, walked six and struck out three in six innings of work. Martin came on to pitch the final frame, allowing one hit, two runs, neither of which were earned, while walking two and striking out a pair.
Nichole Alvarez (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) and Gina Mignogna (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Lenape) each added a base hit and stolen base for Monmouth.
MU fell 7-2 to Butler in their second tilt of the day, the second time during their stay in the Sunshine State that the Hawks lost to the Bulldogs.
The Hawks return to action on Saturday, March 15 when they take on Wisconsin - Green Bay at 11:00 a.m. and Columbia at 1:00 p.m. in their final day at the Rebel Games.
