HAMDEN, CONN. ? The Monmouth University baseball team dropped a 6-0 decision in Northeast Conference action at Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon. The loss drops Monmouth's record to 27-17-1 overall and 11-8 in the league.
After a scoreless game through five innings, Quinnipiac netted three runs apiece in the sixth and seventh frames, en route to the 6-0 victory.
The three runs in the sixth came off of Monmouth starter Matt Coulson (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Boro), who was saddled with the loss, evening his record at 3-3. Coulson worked 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits. The Bobcats made the score 6-0 in the seventh, tallying runs on two hits, two walks, an error and a sacrifice.
Monmouth, which stranded 10 base runners in the game, left the bases loaded twice, in its first shutout loss of the season.
Sophomore Mike Casale (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) went 3-for-4 from the plate for the Hawks, while Brett Holland (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) accounted for two more of the Hawks' nine hits in the game.
Freshman Kyle Breese (Monmouth Junction, N.J./South Brunswick) worked two-thirds of an inning for Monmouth, surrendering three runs on two hits, with two walks. Classmate Matt Frazier (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park) finished the contest for MU, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings, with no hits.
Monmouth returns to action on May 9, when the Hawks play a non-conference game at Rutgers. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
