WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Jayla Cadena and
Kylee McLain were honored by the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) for weekly softball awards, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon.
Cadena sported a 2-0 record in the circle last weekend at the Scotsman Invitational. The California native tossed 12.0 scoreless innings, striking out two batters and walking four over three appearances. She collected her first win of the season – and first in a Hawks uniform – against Cleveland State on Friday, Feb. 21 after throwing three shutout innings in relief. She followed up with a complete game shutout in Monmouth's Saturday victory over Presbyterian, going a full seven innings, allowing seven hits, while walking and striking out a pair of Blue Hose hitters each. At the plate, Cadena also notched a pair of hits and helped herself by scoring the game-winning run Saturday.
McLain started all four games for the Hawks in South Carolina, where she produced a .333 batting average (5-for-15), a pair of doubles, two runs and three RBIs. She hit the game-tying sacrifice fly in Monmouth's 4-3 walk-off victory over Cleveland State. The freshman also recorded her first career three-hit outing with a 3-for-4 performance in the Sunday win over UMES, recording a double, two runs, two RBIs, a walk and a stolen base.
Up next, the Hawks play at the Mardi Gras Mambo in Louisiana from Feb. 28 – Mar. 2.
