GRYGIEL ADDS FOUR FRESHMEN FOR ’23-24 BOWLING SEASON

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ Monmouth University women's Bowling head coach Karen Grygiel has announced the addition of four student-athletes who will join the program for the upcoming 2023-24 season.
 
Abby Binck, Morgan Davis, Ava Johnson, and Gianna Masi are the four freshmen joining the Hawks roster which returns five players from the previous season to give Grygiel her largest roster since 2020-21. Returning players include senior and '22-23 All-MEAC Third Team member Jenna Lehrer, seniors Mafe Aguiluz and Siyah Sweeny, junior Sierra Poole, and sophomores Brillian Soedarmasto and Desiré Villalobos.
 
The Hawks look to build on a 2022-23 campaign that saw them hit the 50-win mark for the sixth time in the last seven seasons. Monmouth received votes in every National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) Top 25 Poll, were ranked as high as No. 23 in the country, and collected 11 wins over nationally ranked opponents.

Before Monmouth: Competed for coaches Jen Grelle and Mike Lifsted as a four-year letter winner at Gloucester City High School … Went a perfect 37-0 in team conference matches and 45-3 overall throughout her high school career …  Once bowled a 300 with a high series of 692 … Was named a to the All-Tri-County First Team in all four of her high school seasons … Was named All-Area in her junior and senior campaigns … Excelled in the classroom making the Honor Roll in all four years.
 
Personal: Parents are Kristina and Steve Binck … intends to major in Business Administration.

Before Monmouth: Has bowled a perfect high game of 300 and played as the anchor for Birdville Bowling – a club team coached by Paul Fleming … Was a six-time Texas Pepsi State Champion … Named the 2022 Youth Bowler of the Year.
 
Personal: Mother is Kristi Davis … intends to major Marine and Environmental Biology and Policy.
 
Ava Johnson

Before Monmouth: Competed for Northwest Career and Technical Academy's varsity team under head coach Mark Lilly and her Junior Gold club team under Phil Platko … Holds a high game of 276 with a high series of 723 … Was named First Team All-Southern Nevada … Placed third at the Junior Bowlers Tour Main Event in 2022 … Finished third overall at the Nevada State Individual High Female Average and Game event … Was a multi-sport athlete while also playing soccer, flag football, and football … Was named Goalie of the Year in soccer and First Team All-Southern Nevada in flag football … A member of the National Honors Society, Peer Leadership, and was a Health Occupations Students of America Representative.
 
Personal: Parents are Jamie and Rodney Johnson … intends to major in Biology.
 
Gianna Masi

Before Monmouth: A four-year letter winner at Jackson Memorial High School where she was a varsity anchor and captain under coaches Brian Tart, Steven Vanhise, and Drew Gibson …  Registered a perfect 300 at the State Finals Pepsi Tournament during her senior year … Recorded a high game of 294 in her freshman year … Posted a high series of 726 and a high average of 204 – the highest in Ocean County for Tournament Averages … Her regular season average of 200 placed sixth in the 2022 NJSIAA Individual Tournament of Champions … Was a 2nd Team All-State and All-Shore member in both her junior and senior years … Is decorated with numerous championships under her belt including the 2019-20 USA Bowling U15 Northeast Regional, 2019-22 Central Conference, 2022 NJSIAA Group IV Sectional and State, 2023 South Jersey Singles Classic B, and 2023 NJSIAA Group III Sectional and State titles.
