BOWLING OPENS SEASON AT DESTINATION ORLANDO

ORLANDO, FL – The Monmouth University Bowling Team began its 2023-24 season by finishing in 11th out of 18 competing schools at the Destination Orlando event in Florida this weekend.
 
On Friday, the Hawks kicked off the meet with a 962-876 Baker win over Texas Southern and later beat Alabama A&M, 887-850. Head Coach Karen Grygiel's squad gave her alma mater and No. 1-ranked Vanderbilt a battle for the final game of Baker format but fell short, 968-1,017.

Saturday's Traditional format schedule was highlighted by a 1,070-979 victory over No. 23 Delaware State, where senior Siyah Sweeny led the way by bowling a game of 244. All five Hawks bowled at least a 192, with Jenna Lehrer rolling a 223, Desiré Villalobos recording a 208, and Morgan Davis and Sierra Poole tallying a 203 and 192, respectively. In total, the Hawks recorded nine 200+ Traditional games.
 
The best day of the weekend for Monmouth came on Sunday, where the Hawks went a perfect 3-0 in the best-of-seven Championship format. Starting the day in 14th place, Monmouth picked up wins over Saint Francis (4-1) and No. 23 Delaware State (4-1) before defeating Emmanuel in a hard-fought Game 7, 199-189, to finish the weekend in 11th place overall.

- Senior Jenna Lehrer bowled her 38th career 200+ game, while fellow senior Siyah Sweeny notched her 21st.
- Junior Sierra Poole played in all five Traditional games and averaged 177 pins.
- Davis, along with Abby Binck and Ava Johnson, competed in their first career collegiate event.

NEXT UP
The Hawks will compete in the first MEAC meet of the season. The two-day event is set to begin on Saturday, November 11, in Baltimore, Md.
