BLACK’S LATE HOME RUN LIFTS BASEBALL TO DH SPLIT

FAIRFIELD, CT – Dixon Black homered in the ninth inning to give Monmouth University Baseball (21-22, 10-7 MAAC) the lead and MU pitching did not allow a run after the first inning as the Hawks won the nightcap to earn a doubleheader split with Fairfield University (25-18, 13-4 MAAC) 3-1. Fairfield took the opening game in 11 innings, 6-5.

After Fairfield scratched across a run with a ground ball in the first inning of the second game, Rob Hensey buckled down and posted one of his best outings of the season, pitching into the eighth inning and not allowing another run. MU backed him up in the fourth, when Black reached on an infield hit and stole second before scoring on Nick Campana's line single to left.

When the leadoff man reached for the Stags in the eighth, Dan Klepchick made his first career relief appearance and needed just 11 pitches to get three outs and end the inning. Casey Caufield reached on an error with one away in the ninth before Black drove the eventual winning homer into the trees in left. Klepchick went 1-2-3 in the ninth to secure the MU win.

In the opener, James Harmstead sparked MU early with a two-run homer in the first. The Stags hit a solo in the opening inning to answer and tied it on a sac fly in the third, with Trey Dombroski keeping them off the board from there. MU took the lead in the eighth on a wild pitch, 3-2, and added two in the ninth when Caufield and Harmstead drove in runs with base hits to make it 5-2. With one down in the ninth, Matt Venuto hit an opposite field, three-run home run to tie the game before the Stags won it in the 11th on Mike Caruso's RBI single to left.
