WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Phil Stahl homered twice and drove in five, and
Nick Campana added three hits including a home run as Monmouth University Baseball (22-22) exploded for 16 runs on 14 hits in a 16-10 win over Villanova University (17-25-1) Tuesday.
Â
Peyton Maple made his first career appearance, starting for Monmouth and delivering two shutout innings, fanning two. Campana knocked a two-run homer in the first, and Stahl added a solo shot in the second to give MU a quick 3-0 lead. John O'Reilly's homer in the third tied it and Villanova took a 4-3 lead, but a wild pitch and a Campana RBI single put MU back up 5-4 after three.
Â
Villanova scored three times in the fourth to take a 7-5 lead, but the MU bats broke it open with an eight-run fourth, totaling six hits in the frame. The big blows included a two-run single off the bat of
Casey Caufield and a two-run double to the gap from
Chris Andrews before Stahl capped the inning with an RBI double inside third. Villanova got within 13-10, but Stahl added a sac fly in the sixth and a two-run homer in the eighth to help seal the win. On the mound,
JD Greeley threw 1.2 shutout innings to collect a win and
Mason Fitzpatrick got the last four outs to earn his first career save.

NOTES AND QUOTES
"It was nice way to end our home slate. We made the most of our opportunities offensively and made some big pitches throughout the game. It was a fitting way to start the game and end it a few days before graduation with Maple and Fitzpatrick. Maple got us out of the gate with some energy and Fitz closed it out, especially with the big strikeout to end the eighth. I know our guys were excited for Peyton; he threw well. Offensively, we had the big inning in the middle of the game by stringing together some real good AB's. Offensively everyone contributed; Stahl and Campana provided some pop and had big days at the plate." – Head Coach
