TIMELY HITS, STRONG PITCHING LEAD MU PAST RIDER

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Monmouth University Baseball (19-19, 8-5 MAAC) picked up key hits as Trey Dombroski and Stephen Aldrich pitched the Hawks to a 5-3 league victory over Rider University (21-19, 8-5 MAAC) Friday afternoon.

Monmouth leapt to a 2-0 lead in the opening inning, loading the bases with nobody out. The first run came across on a James Harmstead fielder's choice, and Dixon Black dove home on Joey Ventresca's fly ball to make it 2-0.

John Volpe got a ball through the wind and over the left field wall for Rider to tie the game at two in the third. In the bottom half, with two down, Jake Catalano beat out a slow roller to short that allowed Harmstead to score and give MU the lead. Colin McCreary followed that with an opposite field double to the wall, plating two more and giving the Hawks a 5-2 lead.

An MU error allowed Rider to trim it to 5-3 in the fourth, but Dombroski buckled down and struck out two in the fifth. Catalano made a leaping grab in center on Dombroski's final batter of the afternoon to end the sixth, and allowed just one batter to reach on an error in an otherwise perfect three frames to record his fourth save.

NOTES AND QUOTES

"Good team win today. Trey was able to pitch out of some jams and Aldrich closed it out. We made the plays when we needed; Catalano's catch was huge for us. It was really important that we got two in the first and Colin's double was huge in that spot of the game." – Head Coach Dean Ehehalt

-Dombroski moves to 6-0 on the season, the most wins by a Hawk pitcher since Ricky Dennis won six in 2018.
-Dombroski passed Frank Trimarco to move into second in single-season strikeouts, and is now three K's short of Ryan Buch (2009) for the program record.
-Stephen Aldrich earned his fourth save of the season.
-Casey Caufield has now been on base in 34 games in a row.
-Chris Andrews returned to the lineup after missing 11 games, while Brady Mutz came back after missing five games.
