BASEBALL’S COMEBACK FALLS JUST SHORT VS. RIDER 6-5

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Monmouth University Baseball (19-20, 8-6 MAAC) had the tying run at third in the ninth, but could not convert, falling just short Saturday against Rider University (22-19, 9-5) by a 6-5 count. Chris Andrews had three hits for the Blue and White, while James Harmstead and Alex Barker homered.

MU jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second when Brady Mutz hit a sinking liner that went past the right fielder for a triple, scoring Joey Ventresca after he doubled. Jake Catalano jumped on the next pitch and hit it through the left side to score Mutz and made it 2-0. Socrates Bardatsos' double got one back for the Broncs, but James Harmstead answered with a long solo homer to make it 3-1.

Rider's Brendan O'Donnell homered to center to tie the game, a two-run shot in the fourth, and Luke Lesch hit a solo homer to center in the sixth to give Rider the lead. The Broncs would tack on two more before Barker went the other way for a home run, his 10th of the season to trim it to 6-4. In the ninth, Andrews singled and scored when Mutz put one in the gap to cut it to one. The Hawks put runners on the corners with two down but couldn't get the tying run across, falling 6-5.
