EDISON, NJ – Five former Monmouth University women's soccer student-athletes and head coach Krissy Turner were named to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference 40th Anniversary Team, the league announced Thursday.
Madie Gibson (2015-19),
Jess Johnson (2016-19),
Amanda Knaub (2016-19),
Anna Lazur (2016-19), Alexis McTamney (2013-16) and Turner (2013-20) made up Monmouth's representatives. All five student-athletes earned major awards from the conference, with Gibson, Knaub and McTamney all being multi-year major award winners. All five players helped Monmouth win four straight MAAC Regular Season Championships, while Gibson, Johnson, Knaub and Lazur were also part of four MAAC Tournament titles and NCAA Tournament teams.
One of the most decorated women's soccer players in program history, Gibson finished her career fifth in the Monmouth record book with 102 career points, including 35 goals and 32 assists. She became Monmouth's first three-time all-region choice and the second Hawk to be named First Team All-MAAC each of her four seasons. Gibson was named MAAC Rookie of the Year in 2016 and Offensive Player of the Year and MAAC Championship Most Outstanding Player in 2018.
Johnson, a two-time All-MAAC First Team honoree, was voted the 2018 MAAC Defensive Player of the Year. As a senior in 2019, Johnson started all 19 games on one of the top defensive units in the country and was selected to the MAAC All-Championship Team. She was a two-time team captain and earned Monmouth's 2019 Female Bill Boylan Award in addition to being a conference-level nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. Johnson was also awarded the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
In goal, Knaub was a two-time MAAC Goalkeeper of the Year with a pair of All-MAAC First Team and All-MAAC Second Team selections. Knaub is the MAAC all-time leader in career shutouts (45), goals-against average (0.56) and goalkeeper victories (58) and set the single season shutouts record (15) as a senior. Knaub set the MAAC record and led the NCAA in goals-against average (0.202) in 2019.
Lazur, a two-time team captain, played a pivotal role on defense for Monmouth's four consecutive MAAC Regular Season and Tournament Championship teams. She capped her career by being named the 2019 MAAC Defensive Player of the Year as Monmouth's defensive unit led the nation in goals allowed, goals-against average and shutout percentage. Lazur began her career as a MAAC All-Rookie Team choice, before being named Second Team All-MAAC in 2017 and then was an All-MAAC First Team pick as a junior and senior.
McTamney, the 2015 and 2016 MAAC Offensive Player of the Year, became the second player in program history to earn Player of the Year honors in consecutive seasons, joining Christie Pearce Rampone. A four-time All-MAAC First Team member, McTamney was the 2013 MAAC Rookie of the Year and graduated ranked sixth in Monmouth history with 89 career points on the strength of 31 goals and 27 assists.
The architect of Monmouth's success, Turner has led Monmouth to seven consecutive MAAC Regular Season Championship seasons since the program joined the conference in 2013. Five of those years, Monmouth claimed the tournament title, including the previous four years, and Turner has been named the MAAC Coach of the Year on four occasions. Since entering the MAAC, Monmouth boasts 73 all-conference selections, 28 major award winners and owns a 63-4-3 record in conference games. Turner's teams also excel academically and have been awarded the NSCAA/United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award every season.
