EDISON, NJ – The Monmouth University softball team swept conference weekly awards, as junior
Kayla Rosado was named MAAC Player of the Week, sophomore
Alyssa Irons was named MAAC Pitcher of the Week, and freshman
Lindsey Baron was named MAAC Rookie of the Week.
In Monmouth's 4-2 week, Rosado batted .500 with nine RBI. In the game one win over Niagara on Friday, she went 2-for-4 with three RBI. She followed that up in game two with three more RBI. In the game two win over Canisius on Saturday, Rosado went 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs. She struck out only once in 18 at bats during the week.
Irons pitched Monmouth's first perfect game since 2006 on Friday against Niagara. She pitched all seven innings without allowing a walk or a hit and struck out nine batters in the 6-0 win. During the week, she registered a 2-1 record with a 1.15 ERA. In 24.1 innings, she gave up just four earned runs with 25 strikeouts. In three conference games, she pitched 17.1 innings and gave up one run with 19 strikeouts.
Baron batted .421 with two home runs, four RBI, and 10 runs. She scored at least one run in all six games during the week. Against non-conference opponent Kent State, she launched a two-run home run to center field. In the win over Canisius on Saturday, she crushed another two-run home run to center field. Baron also registered two triples, a double, and three walks on the week.
With two sweeps over Niagara and Canisius to open MAAC play, the Hawks improved to 17-10 (4-0 MAAC) on the season. Monmouth will host non-conference opponent Delaware tomorrow on ESPN3.
