JERSEY CITY, NJ  – With three RBI each from senior Rachel Shotzbarger and junior Katie Baron, the Monmouth University softball team racked up 16 hits and ran away with the 9-3 victory in game one at Saint Peter's, before falling in game two to register a split on the day, 4-2. After giving up three runs in the first inning, junior pitcher Amanda Riley settled in, pitching six scoreless innings and earning her 13th win of the season in game one. In game two, Monmouth scored two runs from sacrifice flies, but could not overcome two early runs followed by a two-run home run from the Peacocks. The Hawks record now stands at 20-25 (10-6 MAAC) on the season, and will travel to Siena tomorrow for a doubleheader.

NOTES AND QUOTES

“Today we simply didn't have the motor and tenacity to ultimately achieve our goals. We found ways to adjust enough in game one, but came out flat in game two. We needed more urgency, especially earlier in the game. We look to improve tomorrow against a very good Siena team.” - Monmouth head coach Shannon Salsburg

-In game one, Monmouth opened the scoring with a two-RBI double from Shotzbarger to score Justene Reyes and Chloe Howerth.

-Saint Peter's answered with three runs in the bottom of the first inning and took the 3-2 lead.

-In the top of the second inning, Monmouth regained the lead with two runs. Reyes hit a sacrifice fly to left field before Alex Holzman singled to score Baron.

-The Hawks added two more runs in the top of the third to go ahead 6-3. Baron singled home Kayla Rosado, and Howerth roped a two-RBI double.

-Shotzbarger registered her third RBI of the day in the top of the sixth, scoring Reyes on a single.

-In the top of the seventh, Baron launched a two-run home run to score Jasmine Higa. The home run was Baron's sixth of the year.

-In game two, the Peacocks jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Monmouth's Deangie Jimenez cut the lead in half with a sacrifice fly to score Shotzbarger.

-In the bottom of the third, Saint Peter's hit a two-run homer to take a 4-1 advantage.

-Both teams were kept off the board until the top of the sixth, when Monmouth's Justene Reyes hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Baron. The Hawks could not plate any more runs to eventually fall 4-2.
