FAIRFIELD, CT –  The Monmouth University men's and women's swimming teams dropped their Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opening meet to Fairfield on Saturday afternoon at Leslie C. Quick RecPlex Pool.

The Hawks finished first in multiple races, including the men's 200-meter medley relay, as well as Tyler Lutter winning the 50-meter freestyle, Trevor Askew in the 200-meter breaststroke and Anne Skimmons in the 200-meter IM.

The competition took place in a meter pool, which is longer than the 25-yard pool Monmouth's teams have competed in this season.

NOTES & QUOTES
"Swimming in a 25 meter pool was a challenge the team hadn't seen before. The normal times and splits the team was accustomed to didn't apply to today's meet. We were not as sharp as we had been early in the season, but the team continued to race with great energy."
- Monmouth head coach Matt Nunnally

- Tyler Lutter won the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 24.74.

- Lutter earned his second first-place finish of the 2017-18 season.

- Lutter was also second in the 100-meter freestyle event, touching the wall in 55.67.

- Trevor Askew was first in the 200-meter breaststroke with a time of 2:33.10.

- Askew's victory was his first win of 2017-18.

- Askew also turned in a pair of second-place finishes in the 200-meter IM, clocking in at 2:19.75, and the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 2:04.82.

- The men's winning 200-meter medley relay team of Ryan Reutti, Austin D'Angelo, Hunter Klingener and Ethan Lucas finished in 1:53.48.

- Individually, Reutti was second in the 200-meter backstroke (2:19.02).

- Anne Skimmons touched the wall first in the 200-meter IM at 2:31.89.

- Skimmons picked up her first individual win of the year.

- Freshman Louise Barker was second in the women's 400-meter freestyle (4:47.83).
