Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, NY –
Justene Reyes (Carson, CA/Warren) went 2-for-3 with an RBI single, but the fourth-seeded Monmouth University softball team fell to No. 5 Fairfield, 2-1, Wednesday afternoon at Marist College's Gartland Field. With the loss, the Hawks (26-20) will face the loser of tomorrow's first game between No. 2 Manhattan and No. 6 Quinnipiac in an elimination game tomorrow at 2 p.m.
Ashalynn Umiamaka (Kapolei, HI/Kapolei [Eastern Arizona]) also went 2-for-3, while
Emma Hill (Rae, MO/King City [Highland C.C.]) had a hit and a run scored.
Katie Baron (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) also contributed a base hit.
Sydney Underhill (Temecula, CA/Chaparral) took the loss in the circle, allowing two earned runs on six hits and a walk in 3.1 innings pitched.
Amanda Riley (Tracy, CA/John C. Kimball) pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief, walking one and striking out one.
The Hawks opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, when Hill singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Reyes' two-out RBI single to left center. Underhill worked out of a bases-loaded jam with a 1-2-3 double play in the top of the second, but the Stags would break through for two runs in the top of the third. Singles from Lauren Filicia and Angelina McGuire got things started. Consecutive wild pitches brought in the first Fairfield run, before a Courtney Hankins sacrifice fly made it 2-1 Stags.
Fairfield threatened to blow the game open in the top of the fourth, loading the bases with one out. But Riley replaced Underhill in the circle and induced a ground ball for a force play at the plate and a pop out to escape the jam. But the Hawks' offense didn't get a runner past second base in the final six innings or past first after the third inning as Fairfield held on for the 2-1 victory.
