Both starting pitchers, Ciavarella of Monmouth and Mike Coss of Marist, traded zeroes through five innings, before MU struck in the sixth.
Grant Lamberton (Newark, DE/Salesianum) singled leading off and
Shaine Hughes (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) doubled to score him and make it 1-0 MU.
Chris Gaetano (Madison Township, PA/Scranton Preparatory) followed with a base hit to score Hughes and give the Hawks a 2-0 edge.
The Blue and White added three in the top of the ninth, scoring when
Ryan Bailey (Mount Kisco, NY/Fox Lane) singled
Dan Shea (Wilmington, DE/Salesianum) after a leadoff double. Lamberton singled home a run and
Cary Jacobson (Los Angeles, CA/Palisades) bunted for a base hit to score another, and Monmouth took a 5-0 lead to the last of the ninth.
The Red Foxes posted three in the ninth, getting a John Brucker run-scoring ground out before Tyler Kirkpatrick hit a two-run double to make it 5-3. With two down,
Justin Andrews (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy) came on to induce a fly ball to secure the win.
Ciavarella earned the win, tossing six scoreless and walking nobody while fanning seven and giving up just five hits. Coss took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits in 8.1 innings.
Lamberton and Jacobson had two hits each atop the Monmouth lineup. Four Red Foxes had multiple hits.
