Box Score 2 STATEN ISLAND, NY – Eight Monmouth softball batters had multiple hits as the Hawks swept former conference foe Wagner, 7-4 and 11-2 (5 inn.), Tuesday afternoon on Grymes Hill. With the sweep, the Hawks improve to 22-13, while the Seahawks dip to 14-23 on the season.
Emma Hill (Rae, MO/King City [Highland C.C.]) led the way with three hits, including two doubles, three runs scored and two RBI's. She also stole two bases.
Ashalynn Umiamaka (Kapolei, HI/Kapolei [Eastern Arizona]) also added three hits, including two doubles, to go along with two runs scored.
Jill Freese (Oxford, PA/Oxford Area) blasted her team-leading ninth home run and drove in five, while
Rachel Shotzbarger (Saugus, CA/Saugus) also left the yard, drove in two and scored twice.
Chloe Howerth (Roscoe, IL/Hononegah) chipped in with two hits, including a double, and drove in four.
Katie Baron (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) had two hits, three RBI's and two runs scored, while
Nicole Wieczorek (Oakdale, NY/Connetquot) and
Justene Reyes (Carson, CA/Warren) also contributed two hits and two runs scored each.
Amanda Riley (Tracy, CA/John C. Kimball) picked up her fourth save in Game 1 and went the distance in Game 2 for her ninth win of the year. All told, the sophomore hurler allowed three runs, one earned, on three hits and three walks in 6.1 innings pitched. She struck out six.
Sydney Underhill (Temecula, CA/Chaparral) earned her team-leading 13th win in Game 1, allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits and a walk in 5.2 innings pitched. She struck out three.
Wagner struck first in Game 1, scoring on a double steal in the bottom of the first. Monmouth fought back with a four-run top of the third. Howerth's two-run single gave the Hawks the lead, before Shotzbarger homered to make it 3-1. Reyes and Umiamaka hit back-to-back doubles to give Monmouth a 4-1 lead.
The Hawks added two more runs in the top of the sixth. Following Umiamaka's second double of the game, the senior third baseman scored on an error on the infield. Baron followed with a fielder's choice that plated Monmouth's sixth run of the game. The Seahawks got both runs back in the bottom of the inning on Morgan Brown's two-out, two-run double. But Riley entered the game to record a strikeout, ending the threat.
After Monmouth tacked on a run on Freese's two-out RBI single to score Shotzbarger in the top of the seventh, Wagner countered with a run of its own with two walks and a fielder's choice. But that was all they could muster as Riley secured the save.
In Game 2, the Hawks immediately jumped on the Seahawks for six runs. Hill walked, stole second and scored on a Howerth double. Reyes reached on an error to drive in Howerth. Following an Umiamaka single, Freese hit her ninth home run of the season to give Monmouth a 5-0 lead. Another error and a hit-by-pitch set the table for Hill, who capped the scoring with an RBI double.
Wagner's lone scoring of the game came in the bottom of the first, when Jessica Carlucci knocked a two-run home run. But Monmouth struck for three runs in the third and two more in the fifth to abbreviate the game. Two errors supplied the Hawks' seventh run, before Hill's second double of the game made it 8-2 Monmouth. Another error cost Wagner the ninth run, making it 9-2.
Wieczorek doubled to lead off the fifth and scored on a Baron single up the middle. Hill singled and Howerth reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases for Shotzbarger, who hit a sacrifice fly to center to give Monmouth an 11-2 lead. Riley navigated a scoreless bottom of the fifth to end the game.
The Hawks return to action Saturday, when they play host to Marist in a battle of one-loss conference foes atop the MAAC standings. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
