Box Score 2 FAIRFIELD, CT –
Sydney Underhill (Temecula, CA/Chaparral) earned the Game 1 win in the circle and
Ashalynn Umiamaka (Kapolei, HI/Kapolei [Eastern Arizona]) and
Justene Reyes (Carson, CA/Warren) chipped in with two hits apiece as the Monmouth University softball team split at Fairfield Sunday afternoon. The Hawks took Game 1, 6-2, before falling in Game 2, 5-0. The doubleheader represented a rematch of the 2015 MAAC Championship Final Round. With the split, the Hawks move to 18-13 (7-1 MAAC), while the Stags are now 14-13 (3-1 MAAC).
Umiamaka had an RBI double and a run scored, while Reyes doubled twice and drove in two. Seven other Hawks had one hit each, including
Emma Hill (Rae, MO/King City [Highland C.C.]), who also stole two bases and scored a run.
Nicole Wieczorek (Oakdale, NY/Connetquot) had a hit and an RBI, while
Amanda Riley (Tracy, CA/John C. Kimball) contributed a hit and a run scored.
Underhill earned the Game 1 win in the circle, allowing two earned runs, while scattering eight hits and two walks in six innings pitched. She struck out two. Riley got the final three outs of Game 1 and was credited with the save. She then went 5.1 innings in Game 2, allowing five earned runs on eight hits and two walks, while striking out seven. Fairfield scored with two outs in the third inning of Game 2, snapping Riley's scoreless innings streak at 29.2.
Fairfield struck first for single runs in the second and third innings of Game 1. In the second, Courtney Hankins singled, advanced two bases on consecutive groundouts, and scored on Gianna Kinhofer's two-out RBI single through the left side. Tori Reed led off the third with a single and scored on Hankins' double to right to make it 2-0 Fairfield after three.
But Monmouth scored five runs in the fifth and an insurance run in the seventh to take the victory. Consecutive singles from Riley and
Katie Baron (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) put runners on first and second and an error on Hill's sacrifice bunt allowed Riley to score. The Stags retired the next two Monmouth batters, leaving runners on second and third for Reyes, who ripped a two-run double to left center to give Monmouth a 3-2 lead. Following a walk, the Stags committed another error to allow the Hawks' fourth run to score. Wieczorek's single to right then scored
Jill Freese (Oxford, PA/Oxford Area) to stake Monmouth to a 5-2 lead.
Rachel Shotzbarger (Saugus, CA/Saugus) was hit by a pitch to lead off the seventh and scored on Umiamaka's double to left center to give the Hawks a 6-2 advantage. Riley replaced Underhill in the circle following a leadoff single in the bottom of the seventh and got the next three batters out on two strikeouts and a lineout to end the game.
The Stags got on the board in the third inning of Game 2, when Lauren Filicia singled, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single from Alisha Marshall. Fairfield would tack on two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth. The support was more than enough for Lauren Falkanger, who tossed a complete-game three-hit shutout for Fairfield. The senior righty relied on her defense, as she didn't walk or strike out a single batter.
The Hawks return to action Sunday, April 17, when they play host to Manhattan. First pitch from MU Softball Park is scheduled for 1 p.m. on ESPN3.
