Chloe Howerth (Roscoe, IL/Hononegah) went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI and four other Hawks had two hits apiece as the Monmouth University softball team ambushed Georgetown, 10-0, in five innings to open play at the District Invite at the Nationals Youth Academy. With the win, the Hawks improve to 2-3, while the Hoyas slip to 2-11.
Amanda Riley (Tracy, CA/John C. Kimball) spun a two-hit shutout in the victory, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out one. She also went 2-for-3 in the batter's box with a run scored.
Justene Reyes (Carson, CA/Warren) had a pair of two-run singles for four RBI's, while
Rachel Shotzbarger (Saugus, CA/Saugus) and
Jill Freese (Oxford, PA/Oxford Area) also added two hits apiece.
Emma Hill (Rae, MO/King City [Highland C.C.]) had a hit, a walk, a stolen base and two runs scored, while
Ashalynn Umiamaka (Kapolei, HI/Kapolei [Eastern Arizona]) chipped in with an RBI single and a run scored.
Katie Baron (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) also delivered a two-out, two-run double.
After Hill walked to lead off the game and stole second, Howerth singled on a bloop over the shortstop's head to score Hill. With two outs,
Nicole Wieczorek (Oakdale, NY/Connetquot) walked and Umiamaka followed with an RBI single to score Howerth from second, making it 2-0 Monmouth. Freese was hit by a pitch to load the bases, before Baron ripped a two-run double to right center to make it 4-0 Hawks after a half inning.
Howerth and Shotzbarger singled consecutively and moved to second and third on a wild pitch with one out in the second, setting the table for Reyes' two-run single to center to make it 6-0. An error prolonged the inning long enough for Freese to deliver pinch runner
Jasmine Higa (Apple Valley, CA/Apple Valley) with a two-out RBI single to center to make it 7-0 Monmouth after an inning and a half.
The Hawks' bats stayed hot in the third. Riley, Hill and Howerth opened the frame with singles, before Reyes hit her second run-scoring single to clear the bases and make it 10-0.
Riley retired 11 of the final 12 batters she faced over the final four innings, surrendering only a walk to close out the complete-game shutout.
The Hawks return to District Invite action tomorrow, when they face Maryland. First pitch from George Washington's Mount Vernon Athletic Complex is scheduled for 11 a.m.
