PISCATAWAY, NJ – Monmouth University's baseball team (11-12) was defeated by Rutgers (9-14) Tuesday afternoon, 20-4 at Bainton Field in Piscataway, NJ. The Scarlet Knights used three innings of four-plus runs to secure the non-conference victory.
Mike Martinez opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the second, and Chris Suseck hit another two-run shot later in the inning to cap a five-run frame and stake the Scarlet Knights to a 5-0 lead. RU added a run on an error to make it 6-0 in the third before MU battled back.
Grant Lamberton (Newark, DE/Salesianum) doubled leading off the fourth, and came home on Shaine Hughes' (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) single to left. After a walk and a fielder's choice, Cary Jacobson (Los Angeles, CA/Palisades) singled to left to score Hughes, and Chris Gaetano (Madison Township, PA/Scranton Preparatory) doubled to center to complete the three-run inning.
Rutgers answered with eight in the fourth, headlined by five two-out runs. Mike Carter had a two-run double in the inning, one of five run-scoring hits in the inning. Martinez hit his second home run, a solo shot, in the fifth, the first of four more Scarlet Knight runs. Carman Sclafani had an RBI double in the sixth to score the first of two RU runs in the frame to make it 20-3, and Hughes added an RBI double for Monmouth in the seventh to make it 20-4, the eventual final score.
Lamberton had three hits and two doubles for MU, while Hughes had two hits and two runs driven in. James Kelly (Oceanport, NJ/Shore Regional) took the loss for the Hawks, while Ryan Fleming got the win for Rutgers. Tom Marcinczyk had four hits for the Scarlet Knights.
The teams meet again tomorrow in West Long Branch, with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on ESPN3.
