GREENVILLE, NC– Monmouth University's baseball team (6-10) was defeated in the bottom of the ninth by No. 16 East Carolina (12-6), 4-3 Friday night in Greenville, NC. Shaine Hughes (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) led MU offensively, going 4-for-4 with an RBI while Frank Trimarco (Merrick, NY/Sanford H. Calhoun) threw seven strong innings.
The Pirates got a Parker Lamm base hit with one out in the ninth and a Charlie Yorgen double to put runners at second and third in a tie game before a wild pitch chased Lamm home with the winning run.
ECU tied the game in the eighth inning on a Turner Brown two-run single after James Kelly (Oceanport, NJ/Shore Regional) came on and got two outs. Eric Tyler and Luke Bolka opened the inning with base hits, and each advanced a base on Dwanya Williams-Sutton's long sacrifice fly to center.
Monmouth took a 3-1 lead in the top of the eighth after Hughes doubled inside the line and moved to third on a wild pitch. Dan Shea (Wilmington, DE/Salesianum) took a 2-2 pitch to center for a sacrifice fly, extending the MU lead to two.
The teams traded runs in the fifth inning, with the Hawks taking a 2-0 lead in the top half when Robbie Alessandrine (Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) doubled down the left field line and came around to score on a Hughes RBI single through the right side. ECU got it back in the bottom half when Jeff Nelson singled with one away. Lamm's single moved Nelson to third, and he scored on Yorgen's sacrifice bunt.
The Hawks posted four straight hits to start the night, with Shea ultimately singling home Grant Lamberton (Newark, DE/Salesianum) to stake the Hawks to an immediate 1-0 lead.
Trimarco started and tossed seven solid innings, allowing a run on eight hits with no walks in the no decision. Kyle Ajjan (Chester Springs, PA/Downingtown East) was checked with both eighth inning runs, with Kelly taking the loss after allowing a run in the ninth. Hughes went 4-for-4, his second career four-hit game and first since 4/18/15 at Niagara. Shea drove in two Monmouth runs.
Evan Kruczynski started and also worked seven for the Pirates, surrendering two runs on eight hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Joe Ingle added two shutout innings out of the bullpen for ECU and earned the win. Four Pirates had multiple hits.
The teams return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
