WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - In its second year in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), Monmouth University claimed the 2014-15 Commissioner's Cup, which serves as a symbol of broad-based athletic excellence within the league, and earned its second straight MAAC Men's Commissioner's Cup crown.
Monmouth, which finished second overall a season ago, racked up 145.50 points over the course of the 2014-15 academic year, powered by MAAC Championships in field hockey, men's soccer, and men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field, to finish 11.25 points ahead of Marist College. Monmouth also claimed regular season championships in women's soccer, field hockey and men's tennis.
On the men's side, Monmouth, which won the regular season championship in men's tennis and conference titles in both seasons of track and field, amassed 72.00 points, which was 7.5 points better than Iona College.
“We are all very proud of the accomplishments our teams that led to Monmouth winning the MAAC Overall and Men's Commissioner's Cup,” said Dr. Marilyn McNeil, Vice President and Director of Athletics. “To win the overall cup in our second year as a member institution is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our student-athletes, coaches and staff members! Additionally, our male athletes are also to be commended for capturing the cup in back to back years.”
The Monmouth women's teams finished in third position with 73.24 points, just 3.25 points behind second-place Marist. Fairfield claimed the women's trophy with 86.00 points.
Head men's and women's track and field coach Joe Compagni, who led his squads to all four championships once again, added, "Winning the Commissioner's Cup as the top overall program in the MAAC is a huge accomplishment for Monmouth and something which everyone connected to the University can be proud of for sure. I am glad that our men and women were able to defend our team titles in both indoor and outdoor track this year, and it was great to see so many other teams on campus excel again this year as well.”
“Congratulations to Monmouth University and its student-athletes, coaches and administrators in winning their first ever MAAC Overall Commissioner's Cup,” noted MAAC Commissioner Rich Ensor. “When Monmouth was seeking membership into the MAAC, it was envisioned that the quality of its overall program would be strong and winning the Commissioner's Cup reinforces the view that Monmouth has a deep and talented athletic program. Congratulations to athletic director Marilyn McNeil on her leadership and vision with the athletic program at Monmouth.”
Dating back to its tenure in the Northeast Conference, Monmouth has now won eight overall commissioner's cups in program history.
About the Commissioner's Cup:
In the conference's continuing efforts to recognize the achievements of its student-athletes, the Commissioner's Cup is awarded annually as a symbol of overall excellence in athletics in the 25 championship athletic events conducted within the MAAC. Each institution is scored in all championships that it fields a varsity team. However, only the scores from the men's and women's basketball participation, plus the other top six men's and other top six women's championships are used to determine an institution's total points.
