West Long Branch, NJ – After guiding the Monmouth University swimming program for the last 11 years, head coach
Matt Nunnally has decided to retire from coaching.
Nunnally guided the program since its reintroduction ahead of the 2015-16 season and through its transition to the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA). He led the Hawks into the CAA for the 2022-23 season, where Callan Smith won a gold medal at the league's championships in the 100 backstroke.
This past season, Nunnally and the Hawks broke 11 school records at the CAA Championships, with
Jensen Ritter taking home bronze in the 200 butterfly.
As a member of the MAAC, MU had several swimmers collect accolades. Along with numerous gold medal winners, Nunnally coached Smith, who was named the MAAC Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet (2022) and Rookie of the Meet (2019) and Co-Outstanding Swimmers of the Meet Camryn McHugh and Georgia Watkins (2022).
Monmouth's student-athletes have been successful in the classroom as well. Women's swimming has now earned the CSCAA Scholar All-America Team award in 14 consecutive semesters, while the men have been recognized in each of the past 12 semesters. The Hawks have also had numerous student-athletes named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District teams.
A national search for the program's next head coach will begin immediately.
