MONMOUTH FALLS TO MARIST 10-3 IN MAAC TOURNAMENT

FISHKILL, N.Y. – Junior Dan Shea (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) was one of three Hawks with two hits, which included a home run, but No. 5 seed Monmouth's season came to a close with a 10-3 defeat to No. 6 Marist in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday afternoon at Dutchess Stadium.

Shea, who went 2-for-4, joined Grant Lamberton (Newark, Del./Salesianum) and Chris Gaetano (Madison Township, Pa./Scranton Prep) with two hits each on the day, while Shaine Hughes (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) added a pair of RBI.

Following a lead-off walk, Marist's Graham McIntire connected on a two-run homer to left center off Monmouth starter T.J. Hunt (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) to give the Red Foxes a 2-0 edge, while a pair of doubles in the third frame pushed Marist in front 5-0 through three innings.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Monmouth got consecutive one-out singles from Robbie Alessandrine (Sewell, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) and Lamberton, in front of Hughes' two-run double down the left field line, pulling the Hawks within 5-2.

The Red Foxes notched three runs in the sixth inning to increase their lead to 8-2, as reliever Jeff Paglione (Mantua, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) surrendered an RBI groundout with the bases loaded, while an infield single, coupled with an error, allowed two more runs for Marist.

Monmouth climbed within 8-3 in the home half of the sixth on Shea's solo home run to right field, his third of the season.

Joey Aiola answered with a solo shot to right off Chris McKenna (Pine Beach, N.J./Toms River South) in the top of the eighth to give Marist a 9-3 edge.

Hunt (5-5) was saddled with the loss for Monmouth, tossing 5.1 innings, allowing seven runs on six hits, with five walks and four strikeouts. Paglione, who entered with two runners on base in the sixth inning, surrendered an unearned run in two-thirds of an inning of work.

McKenna worked 2.0 frames for the Hawks, allowing one run, while Anthony Ciavarella (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) surrendered an unearned run without a hit, and two strikeouts in the ninth for Monmouth.

Monmouth (22-24), in its ninth straight conference tournament appearance and 18th league postseason overall, scattered 11 hits, but stranded seven runners on the day.

Rich Vrana (5-4) tossed a complete game for the Red Foxes to earn the win with five strikeouts and no walks.
