WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y.- The Monmouth baseball team dropped its first game of the 2015 MAAC Tournament, 12-0 on Wednesday afternoon to Siena at Dutchess Stadium.
Frank Trimarco (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) took the loss for Monmouth, allowing four earned runs and seven total in five innings with four K's. Adam Yunginger (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) fired two shutout frames for the Hawks, and Chris Gaetano (Madison Township, Pa./Scranton Preparatory) had two hits for Monmouth. Dave Hoffmann had three hits and two RBI's for the Saints, with Matt Quintana throwing a complete game shutout for Siena, allowing three hits, one walk and striking out six.
Siena got a leadoff home run from Hoffmann to left center in the second, starting a big inning for the Saints. Three straight singles loaded the bases before Dan Swain reached on a fielder's choice to score a run. With two down, Justin Esquerra lined a ball to right field that couldn't be handled, scoring three and landing Esquerra at third to put Siena up 5-0.
Esquerra would single with one out in the fifth before Hoffmann sent a deep double to the warning track in left center, scoring Esquerra to make it 6-0 Saints. Later in the inning, Alex Tuccio singled back through the box to score Hoffmann and make it 7-0 Siena.
Another five runs for Siena in the 8th extended the lead to 12-0, getting a two-run single from Brian Fay and an RBI on a fielder's choice from Joe Drpich. Another run scored on an Alex Tuccio bases loaded walk, and Siena closed the scoring on a Dan Lowndes sacrifice fly.
MU put runners in scoring position in each of the second, third and fourth innings but could not score them.
