Box Score 2 POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. –
Raelynn Galindo (Yorba Linda, Calif./Yorba Linda) hit a two-run home run and
Amanda Riley (Tracy, Calif./John C. Kimball) went the distance in the circle as the Monmouth University softball team won Game 2 to earn a split at Marist Saturday afternoon. Marist used a nine-run bottom of the sixth to win Game 1, 13-4, before Galindo's two-run blast in the top of the fifth was all the run support Riley needed in a 3-1 Game 2 victory. With the split, the Hawks move to 12-20 (8-6 MAAC), while the Red Foxes are now 21-25 (6-8 MAAC).
Emma Hill (Rae, Mo./King City [Highland C.C.]) went 2-for-5 with four runs scored and two stolen bases, while
Chloe Howerth (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah),
Justene Reyes (Carson, Calif./Warren),
Rachel Shotzbarger (Saugus, Calif./Saugus) and
Vanessa Cardoza (Santa Ana, Calif./Ocean View) added two hits apiece. Reyes had a home run and two RBI's, while Howerth also chipped in with a stolen base.
Ashalynn Umiamaka (Kapolei, Hawaii/Kapolei [Eastern Arizona]) also added a hit and two runs batted in.
Riley limited Marist to one earned run on six hits and three walks, striking out three in the Game 2 victory.
Sydney Underhill (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral) took the Game 1 loss in the circle, allowing six runs, five earned, on eight hits. She struck out two.
Monmouth struck first in Game 1 when Hill walked, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Reyes' squeeze bunt. Marist responded with two runs in the bottom of the second on a two-run home run by Colleen McWilliams. The Hawks immediately responded with two runs of their own in the top of the third as Hill again walked, advanced two bases on consecutive groundouts, and scored on an errant throw after trying to score from second base on the second groundout. Reyes followed with a solo home run to center to give Monmouth a 3-2 lead.
Marist evened the game in the bottom of the third with an unearned run. Maureen Duddy reached on a throwing error and scored on Rebecca Freeman's double. Both teams plated a single run in the fifth to keep the game tied after five. Hill reached on an error, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error on the play. Umiamaka followed with an infield single to score Hill. Marist responded with three two-out singles, the last coming from Janna Korak to score Kyrsten Van Natta to tie the game at 4-4 after five.
The Red Foxes ended the game prematurely with a nine-run bottom of the sixth. Gabrielle Kelliher's two-run home run to center got the scoring started and chase Underhill from the game.
Breanna Sniffen (Winter Garden, Fla./West Orange [St. Petersburg College]) entered, but could only record one out. An RBI double from Duddy and a run-scoring single from Van Natta made it 8-4 Marist. Consecutive walks forced in the Red Foxes' ninth run of the game before Samantha Reilly ended the game with a grand slam to left.
In Game 2, the Hawks struck first in the top of the third when Hill singled, advanced two bases on Howerth's bunt single and scored on Umiamaka's sacrifice fly. Marist drew even in the bottom of the frame on Freeman's solo home run to left center.
Monmouth retook the lead for good in the top of the fifth when Freese led off with a single to left and Galindo followed with a two-run home run, also to left. Marist threatened in the bottom of the fifth with three-straight singles to load the bases. But Riley induced a 5-2-3 double play and struck out Kelliher to escape unharmed.
The Hawks return to conference action Sunday, when they travel to Siena. First pitch of the doubleheader from Loudonville, N.Y., is scheduled for 1 p.m.
