Box Score BUIES CREEK, N.C. –
Rachel Shotzbarger (Saugus, Calif./Saugus) and
Emma Hill (Rae, Mo./King City [Highland C.C.]) had three hits apiece as the Monmouth University softball team thumped Campbell, 13-4, in six innings Sunday at the Hampton Inn/Camel Stampede. The win moves Monmouth to 2-1, while the Camels slip to 12-7.
Hill had a triple, three RBI's and three runs scored. Shotzbarger added two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI.
Nikki Sandelier (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Township) added a pair of hits, while
Ashalynn Umiamaka (Kapolei, Hawaii/Kapolei [Eastern Arizona]) chipped in with an RBI double and two runs scored.
Chloe Howerth (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah) also had a hit and two runs scored.
Raelynn Galindo (Yorba Linda, Calif./Yorba Linda) and
Katie Baron (Matawan, N.J./St. John Vianney) each chipped in with a hit, a run and an RBI, while
Vanessa Cardoza (Santa Ana, Cailf./Oceanview) drove in two and scored a run.
Jill Freese (Oxford, Pa./Oxford Area) also had a hit and an RBI.
Breanna Sniffen (Winter Garden, Fla./West Orange [St. Petersburg College] earned the win, pitching two innings of hitless relief, surrendering only one walk.
Amanda Riley (Tracy, Calif./John C. Kimball) got the start in the circle and allowed four earned runs on four hits and two walks in three innings. She struck out one.
Sydney Underhill (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral) closed out the victory with a 1-2-3 sixth inning.
Campbell jumped out on top with two runs in the bottom of the first. Ericka Nesbitt hit a one-out triple, before scoring on a Stephanie Jones single. Jones scored on a Lia Batchelor double to make it 2-0 after one inning.
After reaching on an error to lead off the second inning, Shotzbarger scored on Galindo's RBI single to right later in the inning to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Hawks evened the score when Hill led off the third with a single, moved to second on a groundout, took third on a Shotzbarger single and scored on a wild pitch on what would've been the third strike and third out against Sandelier.
Campbell retook the lead, 4-2, in the bottom of the third on a pair of wild pitches. But Monmouth immediately responded with a five-run fourth. The Hawks did their damage with six hits, including RBI doubles from Shotzbarger and Umiamaka and a run-scoring single from Freese.
A pair of errors early in the sixth helped Monmouth to a six-run inning, pushing the game into mercy rule territory. Baron added an RBI single, Hill hit a bases-clearing triple and Cardoza drove in the final run with sacrifice fly.
The Hawks return to action Friday, when they travel to Orlando, Fla., to take part in the UCF Spring Fling. Monmouth faces Butler at 11 a.m. and UCF at 3:30 p.m.
