BASEBALL TOPPED BY DALLAS BAPTIST, 7-2

DALLAS, Texas. – The Monmouth baseball team trimmed the Dallas Baptist lead to 4-2 in the seventh inning, but couldn't get any closer in falling in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Horner Ballpark, 7-2. The Patriots improve to 3-0, while MU slips to 0-3 on the young season.

Cory Taylor went five scoreless innings, allowing three hits to pick up the win for DBU. Drew Smith allowed a pair out of the bullpen for Dallas Baptist, and Brandon Koch hurled a spotless ninth for the home team. Monmouth starter Anthony Ciavarella (Phillipsburg, N.J.) allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits and struck out three in his four innings. In his first game as a Hawk, freshman Matt Littrell (Bayonne, N.J./Marist) worked 1.1 scoreless innings, striking out three. Justin Andrews (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) surrendered four runs in his collegiate debut.

Justin Wall, Chane Lynch and Nash Knight all drove in two runs for Dallas Baptist, who scored in four different innings on the afternoon. Shaine Hughes (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) drove in his first career run for Monmouth, and freshman Tommy Gamble (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) added his first collegiate hit and run scored for the Hawks on the afternoon. Kyle Perry (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) knocked in Monmouth's other run.

Monmouth put two runners on in the first after a Hughes walk and a Dave Moreno (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) base hit, but Taylor worked through the early trouble. In the second, Chris Gaetano (Madison Township, Pa./Scranton Preparatory) and Grant Lamberton (Newark, Del./Salesianum) singled, but Gaetano was thrown out trying to score during Gamble's at-bat and MU couldn't push anything across in the inning.

DBU loaded the bases in the bottom of the second, but Ciavarella limited the damage to just one run on an RBI ground out by Knight, and the Patriots took a 1-0 lead. Wall's third inning triple added two more for DBU, as Daniel Salters scored after his walk and Wall ended up scoring on an error as well to put Dallas Baptist up 3-0.

Wall's second triple of the game in the fifth to left center scored Trooper Reynolds after he walked to make it 4-0 Dallas Baptist. Andrews limited any more damage in that inning, picking off Tagg Duce to wrap up the frame.

Monmouth put together a solid seventh inning, beginning with Robbie Alessandrine (Sewell, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) being hit by a pitch. After Alessandrine went to second on an error by Salters behind the plate, Gamble picked up an infield hit to put runners on the corners. Perry reached on another error, this one by the third baseman Knight, enabling Alessandrine to score the first MU run. Hughes then brought home Gamble on a fielder's choice to slice the Dallas Baptist lead in half at 4-2.

A two-out walk ignited the Patriots in the bottom of the seventh, as David Martinelli drew the base on balls, followed by an infield single from Duce and a walk to Drew Turbin. With the bases full, Littrell came on and allowed a two-run single to Lynch and an RBI base hit to Knight.

Monmouth continues the early season schedule next weekend with a three-game set beginning Friday at James Madison.
