MONMOUTH SWIMMING FALLS TO SETON HALL IN SECOND MEET OF SEASON

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - On the heels of Monmouth University's first swim meet in over 30 years, the Hawks returned to the pool against Seton Hall on Wednesday night for their second meet of the season. The Pirates defeated the Monmouth men's team 97-83 and the Monmouth women's team 91-75.

“It was exciting to see the team back in action with a quick turnaround from our first meet,” said head coach Matt Nunnally. “Everyone showed great improvement in their times as well as their approach.”

In the second event of the night, the men's 200-yard medley relay team fell just 1.64 seconds short of the win. Junior Sam Lynch (Ocean, NJ/Ocean Township) gave the Hawks a lead in the first leg of the event, as he swam a 23.74.

Fresh off of earning MAAC Men's Swimmer of the Week accolades, Lynch won the men's 100-yard butterfly (50.01), giving him his third win in two meets. The Ocean, NJ native finished with his best time of the year, beating last Friday's 100-yard butterfly time of 50.97.

After falling behind in the first 10 events, Monmouth scored first-place points in five straight events, starting with sophomore Anne Skimmons (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Borough) in the women's 100-yard butterfly (1:01.39). After Lynch's 100-yard butterfly win, Kaitlyn Negron (West Orange, NJ/West Orange) kept it rolling in the women's 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:18.35. Mitchell Ianneillo (Cape May, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) followed that up by placing first in the men's 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.87 and Savannah Moley (Keyport, NJ/Old Bridge) capped off the run with a first-place finish in the women's 100-yard backstroke (1:16.39).

Three freshmen tabbed first-place points for the Hawks, beginning with Nolan Wild (Bensalem, PA/Bensalem) in the 500-yard freestyle (6:38.84). Summer Shaheed (Howell, NJ/Freehold Township) continued with a win in the women's 100-yard breaststroke (1:32.55), and William Lyons (Sewell, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) finished the job by swimming a 1:06.78 in the men's 100-yard breaststroke.

The night ended with two more Hawk first-place finishes, as both the men's and women's relay teams secured victories. In the women's 400-yard freestyle relay, Savannah Moley, Jessica Arias, Kaitlyn Negron, and Samantha Palumbo clocked in at 4:50.40. In the last event of the night, the men competed in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Once again Sam Lynch led the way for the Hawks, as he swam the first leg in 23.06. Teammates Michael Lanigan, Joey Kulka, and Mitchell Simmer rounded out the relay with a total time of 3:37.57.

“This meet was a great opportunity for the team to begin to see progress and time improvement from where we started the season,” said Coach Nunnally. “With many personal and season-best times, it gives us a positive feeling moving forward towards the MAAC Championships.”

The Hawks will travel to New Rochelle, NY for their next meet, as they take on the Iona Gaels on November 13 at 5:00 PM.
