WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Down by a goal, the Monmouth University field hockey team was awarded a penalty corner opportunity with under 15 seconds left in regulation, but could not generate a shot on cage which allowed Cornell to escape with a 3-2 win, Sunday afternoon at So Sweet A Cat Field. Freshman Meg Donahue (Wyomissing, Pa./Berks Catholic) and senior Trish O'Dwyer (Dublin, Ireland/Loreto Beaufort) scored goals for the Hawks, who fall to 4-5 on the year, while the Big Red, who entered the weekend with an RPI in the top-25, improve to 7-1 with their sixth-straight win.
Monmouth opened up the scoring in the seventh minute when rookie defender Rachel Konowal (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) sent a pass from outside the circle toward the far post. The feed found the stick of Donahue who redirected back toward the near post for her third goal of the season. The assist was Konowal's first career point.
Cornell answered as Katie Garrity, Krysten Mayers and Marisa Siergiej each found the back of the cage within a 15:52 span to enter the break ahead, 3-1.
The Hawks climbed within one in the 53rd minute when senior Hannah Loux (Souderton, Pa/Christopher Dock Mennonite) sent a pass across the goalmouth that was deflected up into the air. O'Dwyer batted the ball in from mid-air into the netting for her fourth goal of the year and third marker in as many games.
Freshman Christen Piersanti (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) made seven saves in cage for the Blue and White, while sophomore Casey Hanna (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) registered a defensive save, batting away a potential successful corner. Elizabeth Schaeffler turned away two shots to earn the win for Cornell.
Cornell outshot Monmouth for the game, 15-7, and held a 9-4 advantage in corners.
Monmouth wraps up its five-game homestand next weekend when it welcomes in nationally ranked Michigan State for a 1 p.m. tilt.
