JERSEY CITY, N.J.– The Monmouth University baseball team got a four RBI day from freshman
Grant Lamberton (Newark, Del./Salesianum) but fell in the series finale at Saint Peter's on Sunday afternoon to fall to 7-15, 4-3 in the MAAC. SPU improves to 7-20, 2-6 in league play.
John Leiter earned his first win of the year for the Peacocks, tossing 6.1 innings and giving up six runs, three earned, on seven hits, striking out five and walking five. Eric Mozeika hurled 2.1 innings in relief, allowing just an unearned run to get credit for the save. Chris McKenna (Pine Beach, N.J./Toms River South) gave up seven runs on ten hits in 3 2/3 innings, falling to 2-2 in 2014. Charlie Battis (Hamilton, N.J./Notre Dame), Anthony Ciavarella (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg), and Frank Trimarco (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) combined to toss the next 4.1 innings, allowing only one run.
Monmouth struck for a three-spot in the top of the first. Second baseman Rob Moore made an error that allowed Steve Wilgus (Woolwich, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) to reach, and Jake Gronsky (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) and Craig Sweeney (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) walked, loading the bases to set up Lamberton's two-run single to right. With Kyle Perry (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) batting, Sweeney stole home and Monmouth took a 3-0 lead.
Saint Peter's got it right back in the bottom of the frame, hanging four on McKenna. Jon Kristoffersen singled leading off, and after a walk, Moore hit a three-run home run to right, tying the game at three. Two batters later, Jim Smith followed suit with a homer to left, putting the Peacocks up 4-3.
In the third, Sweeney's walk and Danny Avella (Matawan, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy)'s double set up Lamberton for another chance to produce, and he did, pushing a two-run double to left and giving MU the 5-4 lead. SPU struck for three more in the fourth to retake the lead, 7-5, as Chris Hugg singled home Kyle Grimes following his double. Smith then singled home a run before Battis replaced McKenna. With two out, Nick Henriquez laced a triple to right, bringing home the third SPU run of the frame.
The squads traded runs in the seventh, with MU scoring on back-to-back doubles from Gronsky and Avella to get within one. The Hawks were unable to push across the equalizer, and the Peacocks took the two-run lead back in the bottom of the frame. Michael Wulff singled and went to second on a wild pitch, coming around to score on Kristoffersen's triple. Monmouth would add a run in the top of the eighth, when Joe Bamford (Washington, N.J./Northampton C.C./Warren Hills Regional) reached on a two-base error and Gronsky brought him around with a single up the middle. MU put a runner on in the ninth via an Avella walk, but could not score the tying run and fell in the rubber game at Saint Peter's, 8-7.
MU will return home for a Tuesday afternoon contest against Temple. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. at the MU Baseball Field.
