MEN'S TENNIS EXTENDS WIN STREAK WITH SHUTOUT OF VILLANOVA

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Monmouth University men's tennis team registered a 7-0 victory over visiting Villanova, Wednesday afternoon in its home opener. Junior Victor Pugliese (Boulogne, France/CNED [San Diego]) notched his eighth straight win at No. 1 singles for the Hawks, who improve to 7-6 with their fifth straight victory, while the Wildcats fall to 2-13.

"This was a great team win today,” commented Head Coach Cory Hubbard. “Each of our players has improved since the start of the season and things are really starting to click. We have a young team and had so many close losses in the beginning of the season, but now our guys have come together as a team and it's really exciting.”

Junior Freddy Marcinkowski (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) and sophomore Ramy Bekhiet (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) opened doubles play with an 8-3 victory over Tim Abbracciamento and Bradley Noyes, but Villanova responded with a victory at No. 1 to even things up. With the point on the line, Przemyslaw Filipek (Bedzin, Poland (Second Lo [Silesia]) and Bee Kumthonkittikul (Bangkok, Thailand/Pendleton School) defeated Michael Rosengren and Matt Colonnese at No. 3 to put the Hawks ahead 1-0.

Pugliese, who was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Player of the Week for the second time this season, posted a 6-4, 6-0 over Thomas O'Brien for his 10th dual match victory of the year. Filipek cruised to a 6-1, 6-4 win over Mark Miller at No. 2, while Kumthonkittikul eased to an 6-0, 6-3 win over his No. 3 counterpart, Donaldson. Marcinkowski defeated Ryan Peyton 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 and Luke Adamus (Mosman, New South Wales/Redlands) and Christian Vieria (Houston, Texas/Memorial) rounded out the Blue and White's scoring with their wins at No. 5 and No. 6, respectfully.

The Hawks will continue their seven-game home stand as it welcomes former league foe Wagner to West Long Branch on Thursday, April 3rd. First serve from the MU Tennis Court is slated for 3 p.m.
