WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Monmouth University men's tennis team posted a pair of 7-0 victories over visiting Saint Francis Brooklyn and Rider, Friday afternoon at the MU Tennis Courts. The Hawks (13-6, 5-0 MAAC), who are now 7-0 at home and unbeaten in 11 straight contests, swept all six doubles matches while not dropping a set in singles play in the wins.
"Playing two matches in a day can be tough mentally,” commented Head Coach Cory Hubbard. “Our guys did a good job of getting through it. It was nice to get some of the other guys in today and they were fired up to play. We have a lot of depth on our roster and these guys do a great job working hard and having a great team attitude. Jason Rothstein, a senior and our captain, has so much enthusiasm and intensity on the court it's contagious.”
Against the Terriers (2-14), Rothstein, making the start at No. 4, along with Richard Chen (Shanghai, China/Pendleton School) at No. 5, and Daniil Ginzburg (Moscow, Russia/Moscow PS #1384) playing at No. 6 each posted 6-0, 6-0 victories. Ramy Bekhiet (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) downed his No. 3 counterpart Andrea Proto 6-1, 6-0, while Bee Kumthonkittikul (Bangkok, Thailand/Pendleton School) earned a win at No. 2 after his opponent retired following a 6-4 opening-set loss. Przemyslaw Filipek (Bedzin, Poland/Second Lo [Silesia]), who earned Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Player of the Week honors this past week, was tested at No. 1 against Victor Blasco, but was triumph 6-4, 6-3.
In the second session against Rider (1-18, 0-7 MAAC), the Hawks eased to the doubles point before Filipek, Kumthonkittkiul and Behkiet each earned 6-1, 6-0 victories, while Rothstein, Luke Adamus (Mosman, New South Wales/Redlands) and Chen each blanked their opponent to post the Hawks' ninth team shutout win of the season.
The Hawks return to the courts on Saturday, April 12th at 11:30 a.m. for its final home match of the year against Hofstra.
