ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Monmouth University baseball team dropped it's first game of the weekend at The U.S. Naval Academy on Friday morning, falling to Towson 3-0. Andrew McGee (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) threw five scoreless innings for MU before surrendering three sixth inning runs, with Towson starter Chris Acker posting seven shutout frames. Monmouth falls to 1-6, while Towson improves to 7-3.

The Hawks scattered four hits on the day, while Towson's Peter Bowles went two-for-four with a run scored and two runs driven in. Steve Wilgus (Woolwich, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) added another base hit, and has now been on base in all but one game in 2014. McGee got the loss for MU to fall to 1-2 on the year, and Acker improved to 2-0 with the victory. Three Monmouth relievers combined to throw three scoreless innings, as Stephen Frey (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) and Jeff Paglione (Mantua, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) worked the seventh and eighth innings. Ricky Dennis (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) made his collegiate debut in the ninth, allowing just a single.

Towson had only five base runners against McGee in the first five innings, but struck for three in the sixth. Pat Fitzgerald walked with one out, and Brandon Gonnella went the other way with a base hit. After a strikeout, Bowles sent a double down the left field line, scoring two. Dominic Fratantuono added another run for Towson with an RBI single, and the Tigers held a 3-0 lead.

Monmouth got leadoff hits in both the third and the fourth but could not convert. Joe Bamford (Washington, N.J./Northampton C.C./Warren Hills Regional) led off the third with a triple and Jake Gronsky (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) doubled to start the fourth, but both were left stranded.

The Hawks return to action against the host Navy tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at Max Bishop Stadium.
