Box Score 2 NORFOLK, Va. – Kayleena Flores (Atwater, Calif./Buhach Colony) went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored against UMBC, but the Monmouth University softball team fell to Delaware and UMBC to wrap up play in the Norfolk State Spartan Classic Sunday morning. The Blue Hens took an 8-0 win in the first game, before the Retrievers defeated the Hawks, 8-3. With the losses, the Hawks fall to 1-3 on the young season.
Raelynn Galindo (Yorba Linda, Calif./Yorba Linda) added a two-run single, while Vanessa Cardoza (Santa Ana, Calif./Ocean View), Lauren Howard (Orange, Calif./Foothill), Rachel Shotzbarger (Saugus, Calif./Saugus) and Kaitie Schumacher (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) had one hit each. Cardoza, Flores and Justene Reyes (Carson, Calif./Warren) each scored a run.
The Hawks were no hit by Delaware hurler Carolyn Szymanski in the first game of the day. Szymanski allowed just one walk in the five-inning no hitter, striking out nine. The Blue Hens scored three runs in the third and five more in the fourth to clinch the abbreviated victory. Szymanski led off the third with a solo home run and had a two-run double in the fourth to help her own cause. Heather Oakley also went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI's, while Jessica Grisler went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, an RBI and two stolen bases.
Breanna Sniffen (Winter Garden, Fla./West Orange [St. Petersburg College]) took the loss in the circle, allowing seven runs on eight hits and a walk.
In the second game, UMBC jumped out in front with single runs in the first and third innings, before adding three each in the fifth and sixth innings. Flores' two-out RBI single in the bottom of the sixth scored Justene Reyes to prolong the game. The two-out rally continued with Galindo's two-run single to center, scoring Cardoza and Flores to cut the deficit to 8-3. But UMBC retired the next four Hawks to come to the plate to end the game.
Sydney Underhill (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral) took the loss in the circle for MU, allowing eight runs, five earned, on 11 hits and two walks in 5.2 innings pitched. She struck out four.
The Hawks return to action Friday, when they begin play in the George Mason Invitational. Monmouth will face the host Patriots at 3:45 p.m.
