ARLINGTON, Va.- Chris McKenna (Pine Beach, N.J./Toms River South) was strong on the mound again for MU, allowing just a run on three hits through 7.1 innings, but MU fell short on Sunday afternoon at Barcroft Park in a 1-0 loss to George Washington. MU falls to 3-9 on the season, while GW improves to 6-10.
McKenna allowed only one hit through the first seven innings, a slow roller in the second from Cody Bryant that Bryant narrowly beat out. He retired Bryant on a double play on the next pitch after snagging the comebacker behind his back to start the 1-6-3 turn. The junior right hander faced the minimum through the first seven innings, and went 1-2-3 in six of them. GW starter Bobby LeWarne threw a complete game shutout, surrendering only one hit on the day, walking nobody and striking out seven. Frank Trimarco (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) got two outs in succession in the eighth in relief of McKenna.
MU got a leadoff single from Grant Lamberton (Newark, Del./Salesianum) in the sixth and moved him to second on Kyle Perry (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South)'s sac bunt, but were unable to bring the freshman around.
In the eighth, Owen Beightol led off with a double down the left field line. A sacrifice bunt from Bryant moved Beightol to third, and Bobby Campbell followed with an RBI single through the drawn-in MU infield to give George Washington the only run they would need.
