EDISON, N.J. – Junior goalkeeper Amanda Westerweller (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Defensive Player of the Week, league officials announced Tuesday afternoon. Westerweller, who earns her first career weekly award, made a career-high seven saves in the season opener at No. 15 Northeastern.
“Amanda's play since the first scrimmage to the first game has helped us make a huge leap forward,” said head coach Carli Figlio. “From the backfield, she has an amazing presence. She is making some fantastic saves and she has been able to gain a ton of confidence. Her improvement from day one of preseason to this point has been tenfold and we are really excited and proud of her.”
In just her second career start in cage, Westerweller kept the Hawks in the game against the Huskies. The local product, who made four saves in the first half, did not allow a goal until the 37th minute when Northeastern knotted the score at 1-1. Despite getting tagged with the loss, Westerweller recorded a .778 save percentage against NU.
Westerweller and the Hawks will travel to East Lansing, Mich. for a pair of contests at Michigan State next weekend. On Friday, September 6th, the Hawks will take on Kent State, before taking on the Spartans on September 8th.
