Monmouth Falls to Drexel in CAA Championship

FINAL SCORE
Drexel 3 (13-7, 3-2 CAA)
Monmouth 2 (13-4, 5-0 CAA)

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Top-seeded Monmouth field hockey fell 3–2 to third-seeded Drexel in the CAA Championship at So Sweet a Cat Field on Sunday afternoon.

The game was evenly matched statistically.

After a scoreless first quarter, Natalie Foster broke through in the 18th minute on a penalty corner, assisted by Valentine van Hellemont. Van Hellemont proved pivotal for Drexel, playing a role in all three of the Dragons' goals.

Drexel carried a 1–0 lead into halftime before Monmouth's redshirt freshman Ava Zerfass scored the biggest goal of her young career. Milla Frye found Zerfass on the right side of the goal, and Zerfass finished cleanly to even the score at 1–1.

Van Hellemont quickly responded for Drexel, scoring in the 34th minute to restore the Dragons' lead. Just three minutes later, she set up Ryan Hickey, who buried a shot in the 37th minute to extend the advantage to 3–1.

The Dragons maintained that two-goal cushion for much of the second half until Monmouth senior Emily Singer tipped in a pass from Eulalie Brouwers to cut the deficit to one in the 52nd minute. Despite a strong late push, the Hawks were unable to find the equalizer.

Brouwers was named to the 2025 All-Tournament Team alongside freshman Florence van Doorn and sophomore Claire Campen.

NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Drexel edged Monmouth 12–11 in shots.
  • Monmouth goalkeeper Charlie Bowman and Drexel's Halle Geiger each recorded five saves.
