GREENVILLE, N.C. - Steve Wilgus (Woolwich, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) and Joe Bamford (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills Regional [Northampton CC]) each registered a base hit, but the Monmouth University baseball team fell in the series finale at East Carolina, 4-0, Sunday afternoon at Lewis Field at Clark-LeClair Stadium. With the loss, the Blue and White fall to 3-7, while the Pirates improve to 9-5.
ECU's starter David Lucroy stifled the Hawks' offense, going the distance allowing the pair of hits, a walk, a hit batsman, while registering 12 strikeouts. Jonathan Shippee (Waterford, N.Y./Shenendehowa) suffered the loss for the Blue and White after allowing three earned runs on five hits in three innings of work. Sophomore Jeff Paglione (Mantua, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) scattered two hits without allowing a run while striking out one in a career-best four innings of relief, before classmate Chris McKenna (Calabasas, Calif./Montclair Prep) hurled the eighth inning, surrendering the Pirates final run.
The Pirates scored single runs in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead. Dylan Brown's sacrifice fly with the bases loaded and one out in the first gave the Pirates the 1-0 lead before ECU similarly manufactured a run in the second when Chris Gosik doubled, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a Travis Watkins sacrifice fly.
ECU plated another run in the fourth when Jay Cannon singled to lead off the inning, moved to third on Gosik's double down the left field line and scored on the play when the throw in from left field took Hawks catcher Kyle Perry (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) halfway up the first base line.
The Pirates added an insurance run in the eighth when Brown connected on a one-out triple to the right-centerfield and then came around to touch home a batter later via a wild pitch.
The Hawks return to action Friday, when they begin a three-game set at Virginia Commonwealth. First pitch from The Diamond is scheduled for 6 p.m.
