HAMDEN, Conn. - Freddy Marcinkowski
(Sparta, N.J./Sparta) and Carl Jedlinski (Manalapan, N.J./Freehold Township)
won singles matches, but the Monmouth University men's tennis team was edged by
Northeast Conference foe Quinnipiac, 4-3, Thursday afternoon on the QU Outdoor
Tennis Courts. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 3-9 (0-2 NEC), while the Bobcats
improve to 5-8 (2-2 NEC).
The doubles
tandems of Francis Jedlinski (Manalapan, N.J./Freehold Township)/Laurence Heads
(Stockton-on-Tees, England/Repton School) and David Sherwood (Little Egg
Harbor, N.J./Pinelands)/Tom Kowalski (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) won at Nos. 2
and 3, respectively, to stake the Hawks to a 1-0 lead. Jedlinski and Heads defeated
Garrett Lane and Eric Ambrosio, 8-5, while Sherwood and Kowalski beat Chris
Nelson and Alex Lazerowich, 8-3.
But the
Bobcats took four of six singles flights to edge the Hawks. Marcinkowski got
past Andrew Weeden, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1, while Carl Jedlinski defeated Corey
Morgenstern, 6-7 (6), 6-2, 6-4, at No. 4.
Francis
Jedlinski fell to James Kwei, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 2, while Heads was defeated
by Garrett Lane, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 3. The Bobcats took the remaining two singles
matches at Nos. 5 and 6 to clinch the match. Sherwood fell to Ambrosio, 6-1,
7-6, at No. 5, while Stephen Suboleski (Sicklerville, N.J.) was defeated by
John Petrini, 7-5, 7-6 (4) at No. 6.
The Hawks return to Northeast Conference action in
Connecticut on Saturday, when they travel to Sacred Heart. First serve is
scheduled for 2 p.m. in Fairfield, Conn.
