MONMOUTH BASEBALL DROPS SERIES FINALE TO VIRGINIA, 13-1

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - The Monmouth University baseball fell in the series finale to the University of Virginia, which is ranked No. 17 in the USA Today/ESPN poll, 13-1, Sunday afternoon at Davenport Field.  With the loss, the Hawks record evens at 3-3, while the Cavaliers improve to 5-1-1.

After three scoreless innings, UVa got on the board in the home half of the fourth when Brandon Downes connected on a RBI double to left and Keith Werman followed later in the inning with a safety squeeze to give the Cavs a 2-0 advantage.  Virginia added to its lead in the ensuing two innings, putting a combined 10 runs on the board to go ahead 12-0.

Craig Sweeney (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) singled up the middle in the seventh and moved over on Jon Guida's (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) base hit to right.  Josh Boyd (Port Murray, N.J./West Morris Central) connected on a RBI single to centerfield, plating the Hawks' lone tally of the contest.  UVa scored a run in its final at bat to secure the 13-1 victory.

Boyd, Danny Avella (Matawan, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) and Sweeney each registered a multi-hit game for the Hawks, who had 11 hits on the afternoon.

Andrew McGee (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) threw 4.2 innings in his first career start for the Blue and White.  The sophomore allowed seven runs on eight hits with one strikeout in the loss.

Stephen Frey (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville), Jonathan Shippee (Waterford, N.J./Shenendehowa), Stephen Prosapio (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet), and Jeff Paglione (Mantua, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) all saw action out of the Hawks' bullpen.

UVa's starter Whit Mayberry earned the victory, allowing six hits without a walk in 6.0 innings on the hill.

Monmouth will travel back to Virginia next weekend to take on Virginia Commonwealth in a three-game series in Richmond.
