LORETTO, Pa. – Junior
Trish O'Dwyer (Dublin, Ireland/Loreto Beaufort) scored her fifth goal of the season, but the Monmouth University field hockey team fell to Saint Francis (Pa.), 4-1, Sunday afternoon in the Northeast Conference opener for both teams.
SFU scored a pair of goals before Monmouth got on the board in the 23rd minute. Sophomore
Amanda Schoenfeld (West Sayville, N.Y./Connetquot) sent a pass to O'Dwyer at the top of the circle where the forward took a hard shot which found its way to the back of the cage inside the left post. The Red Flash added another tally before the break and registered a second-half insurance goal to seal the 4-1 victory.
Sophomore
Amanda Westerweller (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) and junior
Teresa Mathews (Lumberton, N.J./Holmdel) split time in cage for the Blue and White. Westerweller, making her first career start, made five saves in just over 23 minutes of action, while Mathews turned away one shot. Katelyn Vitali made eight saves for Saint Francis to earn the victory.
Monmouth continues Northeast Conference play next weekend as it travels to Connecticut to battle Quinnipiac on Friday and Sacred Heart on Sunday.
