TEANECK, N.J. - Monmouth University's junior Owen Stewart (Howell, N.J./St. Rose) registered a two-out, two-run single in the top of the 10th inning to lift the Hawks' baseball squad over Fairleigh Dickinson, 11-10, Friday afternoon. The Blue and White, which had five players record multi-hit games highlighted by Jamie Rosenkranz's (Oakhurst, N.J./Ocean Township) three hits, improves to 25-15 and 16-5 in Northeast Conference play while the Knights falls to 8-30 and 5-16 in league action.
After allowing Knights rallied for three runs on two home runs in the ninth, Rosenkranz lead off the extra frame with a single and moved to second on Jake Gronsky's (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) sacrifice bunt. After back-to-back walks to Nick Pulsonetti (Old Tappan, N.J./Northern Valley Regional) and Ed Martin (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan [Brookdale CC]) to load the bases after Ryan Terry (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) struck out, Stewart followed with his game-winning single to right to put the Hawks ahead 11-9. FDU added a run in the home half of the 10th on a RBI double by DJ Robinson, but rookie Stephen Frey (Washingtonville, N.J./Washingtonville) secured the Hawks victory with his first career save.
Monmouth opened up the scoring in the top of the first inning as Terry singled, stole second then swiped third. With Martin at-bat, and Pulsonetti on first via a walk, the senior classmates attempted a double steal allowing Terry to touch home before Pulsonetti was retired, giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
FDU answered with four runs in the bottom of the opening inning on a single from Joe Martino followed by a three-run double by Mike Eliasen.
The Hawks countered with a four-run inning of their own as Martin led off with a single followed by a Stewart double and Cal Costanzo (Edison, N.J./Edison) blasted a three-run homerun to left-center field, his first home of the season to knot the score at 4-4. Later in the inning, Terry connected on a RBI double, scoring Rosenkranz who singled, to push the Hawks ahead, 5-4.
Jonathan Torres connected on a home run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 5-5, but Monmouth answered in the fifth as Pulsonetti registered his fifth round-tripper of the season and Costanzo grounded out, plating Martin who earned a free pass to get on, to regain the lead, 7-5.
FDU chipped away in the fifth on a sacrifice fly, but the Hawks tallied two more runs in the seventh, taking advantage of two Knights' errors, to extend their lead to 9-6 before FDU rallied to tie the game in its final at-bat.
Rosenkranz, Terry, Pulsonetti, Martin and Stewart all registered a multi-hit game, while Costanzo added a career-high four RBIs.
Rookie Andrew McGee (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) earned the win in relief to improve to 5-2 on the season, striking out three in 1.2 innings out of the bullpen. Nick Meyers (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) fanned four in 5.0 innings of a no-decision, while Nick McNamara (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville), Matt Frazier (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park), Nick Vallillo (Old Tappan, N.J./Northern Valley Regional) and Fry combined for 5.0 innings of shutout relief.
Spencer Kelly is credit with the loss for FDU, allowing two runs on two hits in 2.0 innings of work.
Monmouth and Fairleigh Dickinson continue its four-game Northeast Conference series tomorrow with a doubleheader slated for 1 p.m.
