WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Monmouth University softball team split a nonconference doubleheader with Manhattan College on Tuesday afternoon, winning the first game, 6-2 and losing the second contest, 4-0. The Hawks are now 16-19, while the Jaspers move to 18-20.
In the first game, junior Lauren Sulick (Canfield, Ohio /Canfield) collected her 15th win of the season, which places her in a tie for the sixth-most victories in a single season in program history. She pitched a complete-game six-hitter, striking out six and walking four in the win.
The Hawks got on the board in the third when sophomore Tish Derer (Philadelphia, Pa. /Saint Basil Academy) scored on a fielder's choice. After the Jaspers countered with a pair of runs in the fourth, Monmouth put up a five-spot in the sixth to seize control of the contest.
Freshmen Alicia DeSanto (Upper Darby, Pa. /Upper Darby) and Kaitie Schumacher (San Diego, Calif. /Scripps Ranch) each collected a pair of hits in the first game for the Hawks, as the former added a RBI and a run scored and the latter crossed the plate once.
In the second contest, MC's Ashley Rampino fired a three-hit shutout to help the visitor's record the split. Sulick took the loss for Monmouth, giving up four hits and a run in four innings of work. Senior Dara Palms (Humble, Tex. /Humble) finished the second contest for the Hawks, giving up five hits and three runs in three innings of work.
The Hawks return to action tomorrow, Wednesday, when they travel to Rider University for a nonconference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm.
