NEWARK, N.J. - The Monmouth University men's tennis team earned its first victory of the spring season by defeating in-state rival New Jersey Institute of Technology on Saturday at The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility. The Hawks edged the Highlanders, 4-3, by splitting the singles matches and winning the doubles point.

The Blue and White earned points at the second, fourth and fifth singles slots. Amar Subasic (Sarajavo, Bosnia/Austin Peay) knocked off Fraser Croad in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 at number two.  Harveer Bhalla (Buckinghamshire, England /Dr. Challoner's Grammar School) defeated Joao Tasca, 6-4, 6-3 and senior Ian Terpilowski (Mount Macedon, Victoria, Australia/Braemar College) battled to a three-set victory over Dan Salomon, 1-6, 7-5, 6-4.

On the doubles side, the duo of Laurence Heads (Stockton-on-Tees, England /Repton School) and Terpilowski defeated Ike Kiro and Martin Cederquist, 8-5. MU dropped the second doubles match 8-2, but earned the decisive triumph at third singles as Subasic and Stephen Suboleski (Sicklerville, N.J.) took down Croad and Bryan Keelan, 8-6.

The Hawks return to the court on Tuesday, March 8, when they play Saint Joseph's University in Orlando, Florida.
