WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Monmouth University men's soccer team, ranked fourth in the week's NSCAA/HendrickCars.com National Poll, fell to Loyola (Md.), 2-0 on Saturday afternoon on The Great Lawn. The loss is the Hawks first of the season (6-1-0) and snaps a nine-game regular season winning streak dating back to last season, while the Greyhounds improve to 2-3-1. The match was contested in front of a season-high 1,355 people on The Great Lawn.
Loyola scored the match's first goal in the 44th minute when Gary Weisbaum got free in the box and slotted the ball into the lower right corner of the net for the tally. The Greyhounds took that one-goal lead into the half, even though MU outshot them in the first half, 6-3.
The visitor's got their second goal in the 52nd minute when Phil Bannister received a cross to the far post and converted a sliding volley for his team-leading fourth goal of the season. Kevin Curran was credited with the assist on the play.
Monmouth outshot Loyola, 13-11 in the match, while each team had four corner kicks apiece.
The Hawks return to action on Friday, October 1 when they kick off Northeast Conference play by visiting Quinnipiac for a 3:00 pm start in Hamden, Conn.
