BRIDGEWATER, N.J. - The Monmouth University baseball team's 2010 season came to a close on Friday afternoon with its 9-4 setback to #3 seed Wagner in the Northeast Conferecne Tournament, presented by Akadema, at TD Bank Ballpark.
Monmouth, which earned the #4 seed entering the postseason, finishes the year 22-27 overall, while Wagner, which improved to 26-30, advances to tomorrow's championship round.
Wagner opened the game's scoring by notching a four-run third frame to take a 4-0 lead against Monmouth starter
Nick Meyers. The Seahawks registered their first run when Gabby Ramirez drew a walk, advanced to second on Damian Csakai's sac bunt, and later scored on a Jon Lucas single to center. Wagner inflated the edge to 3-0 when Vin Avella launched his 17th homer of the season to dead center field. Following a walk to Kevin McDonnell, Seth Boyd dropped a single into centerfield, which was coupled by a throwing error, and allowed McDonnell to cross.
The Seahawks pushed the lead to 5-0 in bottom of the fifth, as Wagner connected on three straight, one-out singles against Meyers. Following a pitching change, pinch-hitter Matt Logan launched the first pitch he saw from freshman reliever
Neil Harm for a three-run homer to right, giving Wagner an 8-0 lead.
Monmouth trimmed the lead to 8-1 in the seventh when
Nick Pulsonetti connected on a lead-off homer to left center.
WC answered back in the home half of the seventh when Avella doubled, and advanced to third on an error, before crossing on a sac fly, giving the Seahawks a 9-1 lead.
Bobby Dombrowski then drilled a three-run home run to center in the top of the ninth to allow Monmouth to climb within 9-4, driving in Pulsonetti and pinch-hitter
Tim McEndy, on the senior's seventh homer of the year.
Meyers (6-3) suffered the loss for the Hawks, allowing seven runs on eights hits, with five strikeouts, in 4.2 innings. Harm surrendered a run in a third of an inning, while freshman
Dan Smith allowed a run in 2.0 frames. Senior
Andy McDonnell worked a scoreless eighth for the Hawks.
Monmouth, which won its fourth NEC Championship as the No. 4 seed in 2009, was paced offensively by Dombrowski's two hits and three RBI, while
Mike Casale, Pulsonetti and
Cal Costanzo each added two hits apiece, as well.
