BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (May 15, 2010) - The Monmouth University baseball fell 6-4 in the final game of its Northeast Conference series at Sacred Heart University on Saturday afternoon at Harbor Yard. Monmouth, which led 4-0 in the third inning, falls to 20-23 overall and 13-15 in conference play.
Monmouth took a 2-0 lead in the opening frame when
Mike Casale led off with a single, and scored on
Nick Pulsonetti's double to left center, while a pair of errors allowed Pulsonetti to cross as well.
The Hawks went ahead 4-0 after a two-run third inning, when Pulsonetti and
Ryan Terry pulled off a successful double steal, as Terry took home, and
Owen Stewart delivered a run-scoring single.
Steve Tedesco's two-run single and Jeff Heppner's sacrifice fly off Monmouth starter
Dan Smith, allowed the Pioneers to climb within 4-3 after three innings.
SHU knotted the score at 4-4 in the home half of the fifth when Mike Drowne singled to lead off the frame, stole second, and later scored on a groundout.
The Pioneers claimed the lead with a pair of runs in the seventh, on four hits, as Heppner recorded an RBI double, and Robert Griffith notched an RBI single.
Smith (2-4) was saddled with the loss for the Hawks, working 6.2 frames, allowing six runs on eight hits, with three strikeouts.
Stephen Prosapio worked a third of an inning, finishing the seventh for the Hawks, while
Neil Harm tossed a hitless eighth frame for Monmouth.
SHU starter Troy Scribner tossed 6.0 innings, surrendering four runs on eight hits, in a no-decision, while Matt Fitton (4-3) earned the win, and MJ Schifano picked up his first save.
Stewart went 3-for-5 for Monmouth, while Pulsonetti added two hits and a pair of runs scored.
Sacred Heart improves to 28-22 overall and 19-9 in the NEC.
Monmouth returns to action on Friday, May 21 when the Hawks host Fairleigh Dickinson in game one of a Northeast Conference series. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
