STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The Monmouth University baseball team dropped the final game of a Northeast Conference series at Wagner on Sunday afternoon, 7-5, at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. With the loss, Monmouth falls to 13-17 overall and 7-9 in league play.
Wagner, which scored seven unanswered runs in the victory, improves to 16-14 overall, and a league-best 11-5 in conference play.
Monmouth, which scored a first inning run for a third straight game, went ahead 1-0 on
Josh Boyd's leadoff home run, his second of the year, a solo shot to rightfield.
The Hawks extended their lead to 4-0 in the top of the third inning when both
Anthony Lawrence and
Ryan Terry singled and then scored on
Jamie Rosenkranz's double to left, while
Mike Casale's sac fly after Rosenkranz stole third gave MU the four-run lead.
Three straight one-out singles in the home half of the third pulled Wagner within 4-1, while Brian Martutartus' two-run double with two away trimmed the lead to 4-3. The Seahawks pulled even at 4-4 when Seth Boyd followed with a run-scoring triple.
Wagner climbed all the way back and took a 5-4 lead in the fourth, notching an unearned run off Monmouth starter
Dan Smith.
WC claimed a 6-4 lead in the fifth frame when Vin Avella delivered a lead-off double and came around on a Martutartus single up the middle. Following Martutartus' steal of second, Jon Lucas connected on a run-scoring single to push the Seahawks ahead 7-4.
Monmouth trimmed the lead to 7-5 when
Owen Stewart's pinch-hit single through the right side drove in Rosenkranz.
Smith (1-3) worked 5.0 innings, allowing seven runs on 11 hits, while
Neil Harm and Nick McNarama combined to work 3.0 shutout frames for the Hawks.
Monmouth returns to action on Friday, when the Hawks open a Northeast Conference series at Long Island University. First pitch of game one is set for 3:00 p.m.
